Gretchen Wilson - "Work Hard, Play Harder"
By: Matt Bjorke

Five years ago, Gretchen Wilson came from virtually outta nowhere to become an instant star with a song that resonated with female country music fans. Now free of a committee approach to releasing her music, Wilson returns to the airwaves with “Work Hard, Play Harder,” (listen here) a song which may very well reconnect her with not just the female fans who got “Redneck Woman,” but the male fans who enjoyed some of her other tunes like “Here For The Party.” As the first release from her new record label Redneck Records, Gretchen is certainly hoping for just that.
While not quite the firebrand that “Redneck Woman” was, “Work Hard, Play Harder” rocks as much as it rolls and the song certainly is something that the country music audience can relate to; that is that you work hard to earn what you get but don’t forget to live a little and play. All of this is said over a raucous melody with swirling fiddles and southern rock guitars. In other words, it’s exactly the perfect kind of song to play while driving to and from work or getting ready to go out on the weekend.
The music isn’t rocket science and it shouldn’t be. It should make you feel something, and fortunately for Gretchen Wilson, “Work Hard, Play Harder” does. It’s a fun song that plays well to repeated listens.
Songwriters: Gretchen Wilson, John Rich & Vicky McGehee

I am sooo glad to see a female sister artist stand up and take back real country music to the fans and not some little fresh out of college squirt on music row telling the artist what is marketable and what is not.We have paid our dues and we know what real country fans want! Long live "REAL COUNTRY MUSIC"! Its about time we have some female artists(like Waylon and Willie, Billy Joe Shaver, to carry on the torch!

David, actually that was for her re-recording of an old song for a commercial spot for "Saving Grace" without the consent of the original songwriters. Gretchen released this one after that brouhaha I believe.

Wasn't there a lawsuite surrounding this song because it sounded like some song from 1994?

Hey there! So what exactly happened to Gretchen? The post hints at "the committee approach" having a bad impact on her career. Is that why she kind of like disappeared and all? She was so super-hot, and everywhere, and then ... wha' hoppen? She's invisible or something. I guess if I followed country news more closely I'd know ... but it is good to see her back in the game!
