George Strait - "Here For A Good Time"
By: Bobby Peacock
I hope no one tells country radio that George Strait is 59. I mean, a 50something having hits on country radio in 2011? It's just not "hip." Anyone old enough to have grandchildren is too old to have hits, so says our youth-oriented society. But somehow, George Strait's defied the odds again and again. Sure, maybe the hits aren't spending four weeks in the penthous like they did in the 1990s, but at least they're still going somewhere. But I'm sure King George isn't worried.
And I say that he's not worried, because that's sure what he's singing about in "Here for a Good Time." He knows he won't be around forever, but he's gonna relax and be happy. he's gonna kick back and have a little moonshine. He's gonna do things his way — when he gets to the line "But I like to do just what I like," it's assertive, not confrontational. And being the cool guy is what he's all about. Heck, the song even sounds cool and confident, keeping things at a pleasant shuffle. (Oh yeah, there's also the fact that he and his son co-wrote it. No reason not to mix it up a little.)
I'm pleased once more to see George Strait on the charts. Twang was a top-tier album torpedoed by single choices (not bad songs, just ones that didn't fit in too well). "Here for a Good Time" fits into the George Strait catalog perfectly, and it sounds like a fine return to form after a little respite. Even if it falls short of #1, it still has all the trappings of yet another hit George Strait song. And when you get it right as often as he does, the phrase "yet another hit George Strait song" is a major compliment. Here's to at least another decade's worth.
