Ever had those moments in your life where you wanna remember where you were when you heard a new song or artist for the first time? Well, I remember driving around in my car in 2000 when I heard Brooks & Dunn’s “Ain’t Nothin’ ‘Bout You” and knew immediately that the song would be a gigantic hit for the duo and it made me a real fan of Brooks & Dunn. I got the same feeling while listening to The Highway on SiriusXM and hearing Eric Paslay’s “Never Really Wanted” for the first time (on the radio). It’s that good of a song and I fully expect Eric Paslay to become a big star.

What makes me think that Eric Paslay has the goods to be a big star? Well, first of all, “Never Really Wanted” is a really, really good song, completely with a sing-a-long ready chorus and strong lyrics that showcase Eric Paslay to be more than ‘just a singer.’ The melody helps to showcase the lyrics by giving the right amount of swagger as Eric sings about “Why do we always want what we can’t have” and how he never wanted to date a girl until it was too late to do something about it.

The chorus is catchy, the melody moody and progressive and Eric Paslay’s performance on the single is quite stunning. The co-writer of Jake Owen’s recent #1 hit “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” and Will Hoge’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” (which Eli Young Band recently covered), Eric Paslay is definitely an artist on the rise and if he keeps releasing songs like this one, he will be one of the big break-out stars of 2012.

Matt, just a little correction: the lyric you quoted is actually "Why do we always want what we can't have"...
