Emily West & Matt Jenkins Rock the Rutledge in Nashville

One of the great things about living in Nashville, Tennessee is the ability to go to virtually any club on any night and see an artist perform. Sometimes it’s just the singers and a guitar, other times it’s a cover band and finally you have a full-band show where there’s a cover charge. Tonight at The Rutledge, Emily West and Matt Jenkins performed to a full house.

Matt Jenkins took the stage first and charmingly sang his way through a variety of songs that he wrote. All of his songs are traditional-leaning but still well within what country radio plays nowadays. If you head to Matt’s MySpace you will hear some of the songs he sang at the show. One of the highlights for me was his spot-on cover of Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time.” Previously signed to Unviersal South Records, other labels in town would be foolish not to give this talented artist another shot.

After a short time for a set change, Capitol Nashville’s Emily West took the stage and simply rocked. She showed personality, had boatloads of energy and sang with a powerful vocal that recalls many of the greats of years past and present. She sang songs from her digital EP and her upcoming album along with a hell of a version of “When Will I Be Loved.” Emily brought the house down with the powerful ballad “Blue Skies” and then brought the show home with her debut single “Rocks In Your Shoes.”

In an era of bland sameness at country radio, Emily West and Matt Jenkins are the real deal. They sing authentic, catchy songs that really belong on the radio. If you Emily West or Matt Jenkins come to a town near you, I suggest you find a way to see their shows, you’ll be glad that you did.

Rick, Emily has that something special that reminds me of Faith Hill. As for Jenkins, a lot of what I heard was pretty standard radio-friendly stuff. He mentioned that he was 'on that horrible show "Nashville" because he filmed the show at The Rutledge a year ago.

Matt, Thanks for that nice write up of the show. I wish they'd have played at a club like FUEL where I could watch online! I wasn't aware of Matt Jenkins until I saw him perform a bit on the FOX series "Nashville" right before it was yanked. That got me curious and I was able to purchase DJ CD singles of two of his previous radio releases and they were excellent. Matt has a lot of talent and if Top 40 country radio ever has another fit of "new traditionalist" music he'd have a real shot. If he ever offers an indie album for sale, I'll buy it (as long as its on CD that is.) I think Emily West is an amazing gal but sadly I don't see her getting very far on mainstream country radio as she just isn't cookie cutter enough. Like Ashley Monroe and Sarah Buxton I expect Emily to wind up back on the shelf far too soon. When she sang "Blue Skies" live on the Opry it was one of the most powerful vocal performances I've heard in a long while. I'm not a big fan of Carrie, or Martina, or Trisha etc, BUT Emily has something special......

Loved Emily West when I saw her at CMA Fest. Hope she gets to NJ sometime soon or I get to Nashville again soon, that would be even better.
