Emerson Drive - Belongs To You

After scoring a huge Number One hit with "Moments," it was only natural for Emerson Drive to come back with the lead-off single off of their upcoming album with a ballad.  However, instead of being another reflection about life being a string of moments worth living for, "Belongs To You" is a sweetly romantic power ballad that is sure to become a smash hit wedding track for 2009.  Brad Mates vocal is really strong, if still a bit pedestrian; the production serves to enhance the lyric even though it’s very pop leaning, even by today's looser radio standards.  Radio tends to love overly romantic songs, even if they’ve heard the same song a gazillion times already.  Basically, the average listener won’t remember some of the older similar hits and will call endlessly for this song, just what Emerson Drive wants.

While traditionalists are bound to hate it, this cliché-ridden track is a big ole hit for the band and their new label The Valory Music Co.  Then again, the traditionalists probably already didn't like Emerson Drive well enough to care about it in the first place.

Shannie, Even if I said it was 'a bit pedestrian,' I still liked the song. What part of "sweetly romantic power ballad that is sure to become a smash hit wedding track for 2009" makes it sound as if I hated the song. Is it my favorite by them? No. But it's far from a crappy song. And Brad Mates DOES sound good on it. Someone can sound 'pedestrian' and still sound good. Also, just because I said the song uses tried-and-true lyrics that may be a bit overused doesn't mean I don't like a song. I simply said that while this song's been done a hundred times before, I still thought it was good enough to be a big hit.

Wow, that is a harsh review. I have read your review and I totally disagree with your interpretation of the song and calling Brad Mates vocals "a bit pedestrain." The song is powerful and moving I think Brad is sings straight from the heart and is saying what every woman wants to hear, and what most men can never say.

you didn't read my review right. I didn't say he sounded bad. I said his vocal is really strong and that the song was likely a big hit.
