Eli Young Band - "Crazy Girl"
By: Kyle Ward
The last time we heard from the Eli Young Band, they were delivering one of 2010 finest singles, “Guinevere”. Unfortunately though, that song underperformed and failed to crack the top 40, so they’ve returned with the lead single from their upcoming album for Republic Nashville, “Crazy Girl”. The first thing you notice is that the song features a bit more of a contemporary sheen than their previous singles (the distinctive drumbeats of their last album aren’t as prevalent here), but it maintains their signature sound.
Basically, the song is a 3:23 apology to Eli’s lover in the aftermath of a fight. It’s one part damage control, one part charm, but what ultimately sells it is Mike Eli’s stellar vocal performance. Eli aptly navigates from defense to offense like a tennis player on the prowl. He eases her concerns in one breath, then swiftly compliments her and ultimately tells her he “loves her like crazy girl”. Lyrically the song is effective, if unspectacular, but it does paint an effectively charming picture of a guy trying to sweet talk his way back into his woman’s good graces. The melody is particularly good here, which is important given that there isn’t a natural lyrical hook. Unfortunately for the listeners though, there’s no 3rd act to the song where we find out if she actually heard anything after he says “Crazy Girl.”
