Dean Brody - Brothers

When I originally reviewed this single in October 2008, I must’ve been in a bad mood.  Because upon listening to a higher quality recording of “Brothers," I actually can’t understand where I came up with calling the lyrics of “Brothers” “contrived.”  Listening back to the song, I now realize that the lyrics were meant to be written from a younger brother who is hoping beyond hope that his brother returns from war without much harm done from protecting his country’s freedom so with that context, the somewhat clumsy lyric of "I wrote him every night, I miss your pillow fights" actually makes sense.

This is a well-written story song by any measure and it's heartening to see such a song score (currently Top 30) with radio, particularly when the current radio climate doesn’t exactly clamor to play story songs, particularly ones from an unknown artist.  Listening to the song it is easy to see why so many people are excited for Brody’s debut album to be released in April.

I know your intent wasn't to be subversive....just kidding about that.

I wasn't trying to be subversive but rather being honest after truly listening. 'Tis why I prefer at least basic bitrate MP3s for my reviews. Otherwise stuff can get lost, especially when the lyrics beg you to listen to them more than one or two times...

Yes, that's the interpretation I gleaned from this song as well. It sure pulls at the heart strings, but it worked on me and I can be pretty immune to it at this point. I really haven't heard it since my review of it, but it sure was nice to have a simple song like this effect me since it's so rare nowadays. Props for rereviewing. Very subversive.:)

This song is wonderful, as a mother of a soldier who is deploying soon, this tells the story of how his brother feels. Thanks from all soldier's family.

Since this morning was the first time I had heard "Brothers" - by Dean Brody, I would still like to make the comment that it is a very moving song. There have been songs written about the war, but this song covers not only the war aspect, but the main thing is family love. Ok, yeah, might be "sappy", or "corny" lyrics(as quoted from blog) but coming from a large family myself, there is more to this song then just the war. The kinship of brothers/family. Look forward to hearing more from Dean Brody.

There is a fine introduction video on Dean at the Broken Bow website where they play short snippets of some really nice sounding songs he's written. He stikes me as an Alberta version of Aaron Watson except he's a bit of a hoser, eh? (jk) The BBR website used to have a music video from Dean and the song was quite good and was very appealing. Its a shame they would pick a musically inferior song just to pander to the sappy sentimentalism that appeals to the female listeners to airhead country radio. Dean was invited to join the Broken Bow label roster by Alan Jackson's long time producer Keith Stegall, so I know they could offer up a much better song than this. Maybe Joe Galante was right about Craig Morgan succeeding in spite of being on the Broken Bow label. I hope Megan Mullin's next single is a home run and not another weak song like "Cryin' Days"....
