David Nail - "Let It Rain"
By: Bobby Peacock
Do we really need another song with "Rain" in the title? I mean, rain songs are so ubiquitous that Gary Allan pulled off a rain song about rain songs. But hold the phone: this is David Nail we're talking about. The same singer who gave us the excellent "Red Light" and "Turning Home", two songs that are still among my absolute favorites from the past couple years. And the rest of his album I'm About to Come Alive was equally strong. Heck, even that "Memphis" song he put out back in 2002 was great.
"Let It Rain" isn't up to the standards of the three songs I mentioned, but it's still a cut above. It's a fairly standard "too late to turn around" song placed at the tail end of a relationship, and the first verse includes some interesting details like "me and my pile of things that she threw out the window" and "7 years of good can't hide the one night I forgot to wear that ring". Nail has a strong, soulful voice that emphasizes the chorus in all the right spots: "Let it rain, let it pour / If she don't love me anymore". Unfortunately, the hook doesn't seem to tie in too well to the rest of the song — there's no other "rain" motif anywhere else — but Nail's impeccable vocal is enough to compensate. If you'll pardon the pun, he nails it. (Sarah Buxton's backing vocal, though drowned out on most of the song, is worth a mention as well.)
David Nail is one of those rare artists who managed to come back after a false start. "Red Light" and "Turning Home" weren't #1 hits, but top 10 and top 20 aren't bad showings by any means. Although not his best single release, "Let It Rain" still does enough right that it should give another hit to a comeback kid who really deserves it. To swipe a line from Luke Bryan, "Rain" is a good thing.

Whatever do you mean by the chorus not tying in?! He says his stuff is drowning next to him, it's clear that his girlfriend threw his stuff out the window and there he is, in the rain, feeling guilty.

In my opinion, Turning Home SHOULD have been a #1 hit!! He is a genuine artist, with great vocals and easy listening style country. One of my favorites...can't wait to hear the next CD. Please send him in concert to the Midwest area!!

What I like about the song (heck, all of his songs!) is that it "feels" so beautiful. His voice is such a great instrument that I enjoy the overall presentation.

I agree, it's not the best song ever, a lot of the songs from his last album are better, but it sounds like a hit to get him back on track and in theme it's kind of similar to "Red Light". He's really one of the grittiest singers we have right now!
