Danny Gokey - "It's Only"

Throughout the course of his Top 3 stay on American Idol this year, Danny Gokey showcased a propensity to sing modern country music songs from the likes of Rascal Flatts and given the fact that Gokey had a propensity to ‘oversing’ from time to time (remember his bum note singing “Dream On?”), Danny was likely to follow in Rascal Flatts’ footsteps into country music. He not only did that but he joined Kellie Picker and Carrie Underwood as members of the 19/Sony Music Nashville team. Officially part of RCA Nashville, Danny Gokey went into the studio with Mark Bright and this song is the first single off of Gokey’s 2010 release.
When Danny signed his deal he said that he loved the fact that he could sing mainstream songs which had messages and didn’t hide his faith, something he does with “It’s Only.” With a voice that recalls Larry Stewart of Restless Heart at times and Lionel Richie in others, Gokey sings a message song that proclaims that love can and is all around us from various places, including Jesus and church. This is a song that recalls “Jesus Takes The Wheel,” in that it melds a message of faith and love and giving one’s self up to a higher power in a time of need. The production from Mark Bright is crisp and never over the top. You can hear the acoustic mandolin and fiddle in the background while Gokey singls the message-filled lyric in a soft, tender and tuneful way.
While there will be many, many cynical people who wonder why Gokey didn’t just go completely CCM (this song will likely cross-over to those stations), it’s hard to argue with the first results of his new deal with 19/RCA Nashville. “It’s Only” is a smartly produced song that proves that Danny Gokey can sing and the vocalist does have a place in country music. My only caution for Danny is that he limit, like Underwood has, the amount of songs that directly reference Jesus. Country fans are the religious, family type but they also don’t wanna be preached to on a daily basis. With all of that said, this one is a perfect winter/spring single and a good lead-off track for a new artist to release to radio.

Danny has stayed true to who is as an artist. This soulful country song will have wide appeal. Not only are Danny's vocals amazing, his message is one that is timely and tugs at the heartstrings. I look forward to his entire album because he hit this one out of the park!

I liked Danny Gokey on AI and really wanted to like his first single. BUT, I am not feeling him as a country artist. Especially with this first single. He will not be able to compete with the other popular country artists out there right now. He will get eaten up! Yes, he should stay true to who he is as an artist, which is gospel music. I still think Danny has a great voice, but I don't think he fits into today's country music.

Wonderful song, and indeed right up Danny's alley.A fan of his made a beautiful montage set to the song. Touches your heartstrings. I trust it is okay to post this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zcUaiqmfs

I really like this song. The melody grows on me each time I hear it, the message is superb (meaty not trashy). And the way Danny sings it? Soft yet very strong and powerful. Out of all the AI8 songs released so far, I think this song is the best. It represents Danny perfectly: the merging of his love of music and his love for others. So excited of what's yet to come Danny's way! Wish him all the best. BTW, he just might be the "Daughtry" of this AI's season.

Was skeptical of yet another Idol breaking into country music, but if the rest of Gokey's offerings are as good as this easy-on-the-ears current crossover debut; I say bring it on!

Danny has set the bar very high with his debut song. "It's Only" is the perfect blend of stunning, distinctive vocals and a beautiful message that comes from the heart. Danny has delivered exactly what he promised. His album can't be released soon enough!

This song is so amazing! Great job with writing and producing a song that is so true to who Danny is as an artist and vocalist! If all of Danny's songs are as good as this, he will have an amazing career! "It's Only" is FANTASTIC, LOVE IT!

This song is perfect for Danny, he stays true to what he has always said he wanted to do with his music have a message. Danny so fortunate to be singing a song writen by writers that are so respected. Think they chose wisely. Indeed, with what our country is going through right now this song is just amazing. So many people out of work, down on there luck, right now! This song he sings is the Danny J we all admire and fell in Love with and he Loves, he cares. His "Wish". No disrespect for the other Idols from this season but this song is better then anything I have heard released since Carrie won. Cannot that wait until the whole album.

Danny accomplished what he needed to do with the debut single - that is, keep the fans happy but also reach out to new fans in Country Music. And singing a song by highly respected Country Music writers Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum is a huge honor for a new artist. "It's Only" works because Danny stayed trued to who is as an artist. This is the kind of music he enjoys doing. “My Wish” was a huge crowd pleasure on the tour.

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. Dare I say that Danny’s single – amongst those idols who have released so far – is the most representative who of he is as an artist? The first thing I thought after I heard it was that it’s Danny - the raspy voice, the soaring parts, the phrasing, the lyrics. I think it’s a song tailor-made for him, which is why I think this single actually works. I have never considered myself a hardcore Danny fan or a Country fan, but this is good work right here. Out of all the songs that have been released from this year’s idols, I actually think this is the best. Wow, who would have thought?

This is exactly what I expected Danny's first single to sound like. This song is right in Danny's wheelhouse. A powerful ballad with great vocals and a beautiful message. Danny did not compromise who he is and what he is all about with this song and I respect him for that. He is staying true to himself. I also have a lot of respect for Mark Bright, Charles Kelley and Dave Harwood. Danny is working with some great people - can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Wow, this song is so uplifting & perfect for these times. I love listening to Danny Gokey's voice and my whole family is so happy that he made this great single. We wanted him to win on American Idol, but I think he's already won. Bestides music, he has a foundation in his wife's name to help kids & their families. Danny Gokey is the kind of idol Americans shold have!

Was able to hear Danny Gokey's new single on the radio today. Wasn't quite sure what to expect, but really really enjoyed it. Look forward to seeing him on the country music scene and hearing the rest of his upcoming album. Great start for Danny Gokey with this first single.
