Danny Gokey - "I Will Not Say Goodbye"
By: Matt Bjorke

There are times as a ‘tastemaker’ in country music where my senses are over stimulated with all the new songs that I hear. In fact, sometimes I get so lost in the world of new singles that I forget why I got into this business in the first place, because I genuinely love music. So when a new single crosses the desk that renews my love of music, I’m gonna shout to the rooftops about it. The latest single for Danny Gokey, “I Will Not Say Goodbye” is one of those kinds of songs.
Featuring a slightly haunting intro, Gokey sings the first verse of this Lari White, Chuck Cannon and Vicky McGehee collaboration like he’s wringing out every ounce of emotion in his soul. “I Will Not Say Goodbye” is a song for anyone who lost somebody unexpectedly and doesn’t want or care to ‘say goodbye’ to the one they loved. This is what separates the song from a list of other ‘goodbye’ songs and an obvious comparison, Rascal Flatts’ “Here Comes Goodbye.”
It’s not a song about a break-up but a song about loss and how painful that loss can be and how real it is for somebody after they lose the love of their life (or somebody close to them). The lyrics are stronger than the average song of this type and Gokey’s vocal performance, which is all in, is a definite show stopper. While completely a contemporary country production, producer Mark Bright’s production never gets to be too much or overtakes Danny Gokey’s strong, passionate performance.
I knew from the first moment that I saw Gokey perform on American Idol that he had the capacity to sing songs like “I Will Not Say Goodbye.” What I didn’t expect was for him to deliver the kind of song that reminds me why I love doing what I do for a living. I love hearing great lyrics, great vocalists and great melodies. When these things are all added together the way it is on “I Will Not Say Goodbye,” it’s simply magical.
I will be completely shocked if this song doesn’t become Danny Gokey’s signature single from My Best Days and it should help to prove skeptics about his choice of genre wrong. Country music most certainly has room for a singer like Danny Gokey, especially if he continues to deliver songs like “I Will Not Say Goodbye.”

I think Danny has a #1 hit on his hands with this one. I always love the singers who connect emotionally with their songs, and IWNSGB is right in Danny's wheelhouse. He's grown enormously as a singer and yes, an ARTIST since he was on AI, and I believe will, when all is said and done, be the most successful season 8 alumnus. I've noticed a noticeable shift of the hate directed at Danny last year now directed at Lee DeWyze, for some unknown reason (and Lee was my favorite S9 contestant because unlike the others, he really connects emotionally) but Danny, bless his heart, has proven all the hater predictions--that he wouldn't get signed, he wouldn't sell, he'd be forgotten--wrong every time, and people DO remember him and even many of his haters have since become fans. Many are admitting this is an excellent single and has crossover potential. I don't know how many of you have heard the acoustic version of this (set only to piano) but it's stunning, and actually reminds me very much of David Cook's song Permanent, both in emotional intensity, spareness of the arrangement, and even style. Oh, and FWIW, I'm a die hard liberal, a non-churchgoer, and a fan of Adam Lambert, and I have always been a huge Danny Gokey fan and supporter. He deserves all the good things that are happening to him right now. I'm so happy for him.

This should be the country song of the year for the major awards. It has alot of meaning and he sings it with emotions that can be felt by all.

Had a chance to see Danny in concert this past Friday night in Raleigh. Sounded as great as ever, and so much energy and rapport with the crowd. Loved it.
For anyone who wants to learn about Danny Gokey, here is a video link for the interview he had with Kix Brooks, mentioned somewhere previously in the comments on this thread.

Click on the Danny Gokey tab, there are three videos. There is also a hysterical multi-part interview with Danny on the bigdandbubba.com site.

wow, josie, i admire you for taking the time to defend our favorite, danny, against all the bad things some people has to say about him. i have been following him since his audition, and is disgusted with all the hate messages some people are posting in the web. they even tried insulting his church in one of the articles i have read. that is very sad, i admire him as a singer, i love his voice so much. I don't know him personally but i'd like to believe he's the real deal. for those of you who have known him or meet him, please fill us in, all your stories about danny, made me feel like i knew personally too. for those who doesn't like him i suggest you spend time following your own favorites, spend time with them and pour out your love, instead of coming here trying to put danny down. I <3 Danny!!!

Angelique, it's my pleasure to talk with you. I'm glad you asked the question, I'm sure other people wonder about it too! The background post I was talking about is further down the page, just after Cori Z's post. But you probably got the gist of it from my last post. I'll check back to see if you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them as best I can if you do.

Josie, thanks for your reply (again). Please be patient with me as I am new to this. I tried to go back to read the post you mentioned but I could not find it. But thank you again for taking the time to reply to my query. I will try to see Danny Gokey this summer if my schedule will permit it. I hope to meet him in person so I can thank him personally for what he "did" to me. Time for me to go to the airport. I'll try to come back tonight when I arrive home. BTW, dannygokey.com is a gem. I just watched the video of I Will Not Say Goodbye. He made me cry again. Thanks for pointing me to it and thank you for your attention. It's nice to have somebody to talk to. My heartfelt gratitude.

Angelique, you asked if it was the norm for American Idol singers to be ripped apart by people who do not like them. Most AI viewers are just normal folks who watch the show and like who they like, and don't think about it much more than that. With coming in 3rd and subsequently having the biggest male country album debut in 18 years, it's clear that Danny was very well liked by many people who got to know him on the show. And then there's the "AI Internet Bubble". It is its own animal, and yes, it is the norm there for contestants to get ripped apart by fans of their competitors. It is a strange phenomenon, kind of a sport I guess. I don't attack the others, I just defend Danny because when I started watching the show last year and saw this happening to him it just made me sick. I don't know if you had a chance to read my post giving some history on Danny's season, but that gives some background. On the mainstream AI sites, it's pretty rare for Danny to get these kinds of attacks anymore. People have realized that the "storytellers" had the wrong end of the stick about Danny. He might not be their cup of tea but they know that he has so consistently demonstrated that he is a good person that they would look stupid if they tried to claim otherwise. But, there are always teenage girls who really could use mothers that keep a closer eye on them and people who aren't really able to discern when someone is manipulating them for their own purposes (i.e. the people who run AI centered sites that don't actually care what the contestants are like, they are simply commodities to be used to build storylines). What happened here is that when Danny RT'd Matt's tweet about this article, it rattled the cages of some of those people who know basically nothing about Danny except what was presented to them on those sites. I was just chatting with some fellow Danny fans that this has been like getting zapped into an Season 8 time warp. What I can tell you is that Danny has been in the public eye for over a year now, and is spoken of in glowing terms by fans and people who have worked with him in different capacities. And his behavior is consistent with what he says his values are. There would be no point to my saying that if it weren't true, in these days of twitter there would be no hiding it if this were not true. Now that you've become aware of Danny you can look into it and judge for yourself. I'm confident about what you'll find. You mentioned that you'd like to see him perform live, I hope that happens and that you get to talk to him. I'm sure he'd be touched to know what his song means to you.

Brenda, I apologize in advance if I will offend you with my comment: Based on what you've posted, it seems like your life has been full of disappointments with the people you've come across with that you have developed intense mistrust and abhorrence to other people. You accuse Danny Gokey as a gold digger and a fame whore, you must know him intimately to be able to say that. I wonder what he has to say about you. Maybe he will take the high road and say a prayer for you.

Wow! I have to say I'm quite surprised that this guy Danny Gokey is so controversial! I commented on this site (which I found through google) a few days ago to show appreciation to the one who ministered to me during the lowest point in my life. Sure, he does not know me nor did I until right after my mother's burial but he did more for me than anybody else that day. Thanks to my friend who shared with me this song. His song spoke right to my heart, that I don't have to move on right away but that I can grieve for my loss at my own pace and yet look forward to seeing m mother again. Josie, the reason I came back on this site today is to thank you for graciously taking the time to answer my questions. What I didn't realize is that Danny Gokey is being portayed as someone who's viscious, someone evil. To me, he does not look like it or maybe I'm just naive or ignorant about him. Or is it the norm for singers from American Idol to be ripped apart by people who do not like them? Based from what I have read on this blog,it seems like a lot of people do not like this guy and yet they go through so much lengths to just to discredit him. For those who do not like him, maybe it'll be best if you just leave him alone and let us who are not familiar with him at least enjoy his music because his album is truly inspirational, something that is hard to find nowadays. As for whether he is evil or good, I'll do my own research and come up with my own conclusion, I believe that a person cannot pretend to be someone he is not for the rest of his life, the truth will eventually come out. Then, I'll decide if I will continue to support him or not. But for the meantime, I will continue to enjoy his music and hope that he is genuinely sincere and altruistic. I wish him the best.

Now brenda, you have got yourself all worked up here. My goodness. Everybody lock your doors cause Danny is on the loose. A dangerous man, he wants to lull you into complacency with his beautiful voice and then hypnotize you into being inspired to help others with his wicked wiles. Do you have any idea how you come across? I am not even going to address the hysterical fantasy stuff, I assume that’s obvious to everyone. To address some specific points though. It is not true that Danny’s story changes with every interview. I have listened to most of them because with the “job” I have given myself to help clean up these little hater messes, I need to. Danny has been remarkably consistent. His parents didn’t allow the kids to listen to much secular music when they were growing up. His dad did like some country music and Danny was allowed to have some country music. Danny says himself that AI was a process of him figuring out where he belonged. This is not a secret. brenda, I can see that your own competitive instincts are aroused by Danny’s success. Do you have so little faith in your own favorite that you need to make up nasty things about the other S8 contestants in order to try to even up the field a little? That’s a shame, it really is. I like all of them and hope they all do well. Danny is a very talented person who has a passion for music and helping others. I think he will be very successful. Whether he is or isn’t has no effect on how your favorite does though. That’s what’s so bizarre about these AI fanwars, it’s so insane that I feel ridiculous sometimes even answering these things. The reason I do it is that there are nice people who are going to be curious about this new guy Danny Gokey with the beautiful voice, and will have no idea where this crazy stuff comes from. It’s leftover AI insanity, is what it is. Oh and by the way, about the “text your money” thing. Danny has been taking about 1 minute in his set to ask people to donate to Nashville Flood Relief. 100% goes to that. I guess it says something about Danny that when someone wants to really wind up and hit him with a nasty shot, they accuse him raising funds to help people who have been devastated by a natural disaster. I just shake my head sometimes, it’s unbelievable.

BTW, Brenda you obviously don't know him. You're judging him based on how you interpret words and intentions with meaning. That doesn't mean that it's right but it's only on how you see him. Reality it's really different than on how you see things.

Brenda sure seems to have having a rough day. In general, I think it helps artists if they provote strong reactions, good or bad, vs. being so innocuous no one cares about them. So probably a good thing for Danny that he's interesting enough some people can't stand him.
But on the specific points, let's see...
“ he only know christian music and had to learn every song by scratch(why on earth would someone who knew nothing about music try out for AI?)” --- Well, one because he could. Two, his wife wanted him to. Three, he’s a helluva singer and like all of the contestants on AI or similar shows, dreamed of a music career. Four, “Christian music” is actually music, lol, and Danny did know something about it having been a church music director for ~8 yrs before AI.
“then it was I grew up with country music!” ---- Danny has said, and so has Sony, that his background is as a gospel singer (church music, praise songs for ex.). As to what he listened to in his life, vs. what he was a specialist in himself, those are two totally different questions. Danny says that he listened to country music and Motown growing up, but only after his parents began to permit certain secular music in their home, starting with Wynonna I believe. Danny told an interviewer a really cute story one time about how as a teen he got drunk at a relative’s house listening to Tim McGraw’s song “Don’t Take the Girl” and basically had a crying jag over it, pretty funny. And no huge leap to see why Danny would like Latin music, he married a Latina woman after dating her since high school, and is very close to her entire family to this day. Her brother-in-law is a member of his band, as until recently was another friend who is also of Puerto Rican heritage.
“Now everywhere they are trying to shove him down everyones throat everywhere you go!’ ----- Sounds like Danny has a good PR machine and record label/management team behind him. Awesome, go Danny!
“Go see him and you get ordered to pull out your phone and text your money to his foundation on the spot.” ----- Oh, yes indeed. Quite heinous of Danny to be asking people to contribute $10 via text to his foundation for a relief center they have stood up to assist those affected by the Nashville flooding. I’ve seen him do this in concert. Not everyone chose to donate but some did. And he was very cute in apologizing actually for asking for the support on behalf of the people in Nashville who need help.
“! I can see him and his wife watchin AI laughing at contestants and Gokey saying things like "I could outsing any one of them" and saying like I should go try out I bet I could beat any one!” ----- Well, apart from the fact this is highly imaginative, on the latter points about whether he can “outsing” or “beat” other contestants on a show like that -- umm, he came in a very strong *third* out of tens of thousands of people (100,000+ quite possibly), and with a bit of luck at a couple of points, could quite possibly have won. Even those who don’t like him or the type of music he performs will generally acknowledge the guy can sing, including his peers on the show one of whom referred to Danny as having a “smokin’ awesome” voice :)
“Anyone can come off seeming all nice and stuff doesn't mean you are seeing the real person.” ----- Doesn’t mean you aren’t either. I’ve lost track of the Nashville stars and media types who have made a point, often when they didn’t need to, of calling Danny a really good guy. Kix Brooks for one (said it multiple times on his countdown show after he met Danny and did a long interview with him; they also appeared at charity events together – maybe Kix is a big phony too, lol!). Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum on the ACM Orange Carpet, Evan Farmer of CMT, hosts at GAC one of whom is participating in Danny’s charity cruise event next year.
That acoustic video of this song is great, it's really effective in putting across Danny's delivery of this song, and showing quite a bit of "the real person" who is the recording artist.

I find it curious that some folks here feel the need to tear others down. If you don't like someone, or their music, fine. You have a right to your opinion. To feel the need to openly try to discredit and attack someone based on personal assumptions of someone's character shows the true colors of the writer. The campaign of hate is so old and tiresome. Life it too short for that. In my own humble opinion, I Will Not Say Goodbye is a very well written song sung by an exceptional vocalist. Danny's vocal talent and ability to convey the message of this song in particular cannot be denied. Again, that is my humble opinion. I wish Danny all the success in the world.

He is a phony. His stories change with each interview! First it was like Idol was harder for him than anyone else because he only know christian music and had to learn every song by scratch(why on earth would someone who knew nothing about music try out for AI?) then it was I grew up with country music! Then he wanted to do R&B(with a latin twist) then when he was told the only thing they thought they could market him in was country he suddenly became a "country" artist! He is nothing more than a manufactured country artist. It is the people behind the scenes making all the decisions. Now everywhere they are trying to shove him down everyones throat everywhere you go! Go see him and you get ordered to pull out your phone and text your money to his foundation on the spot. He is a gold digger and a fame whore! He is a sheep in wolf's clothes. He puts on a good public front but underneath it all he is just an opportunist who desires be the biggest next thing. I bet that his competitive nature thinks that he has to out do Carrie Underwood! I can see him and his wife watchin AI laughing at contestants and Gokey saying things like "I could outsing any one of them" and saying like I should go try out I bet I could beat any one! He is so stuck on himself and has this need to be bigger and better than the next! Anyone can come off seeming all nice and stuff doesn't mean you are seeing the real person.

Danny I wish and pray for you to have every success. You not only are pursuing your dream, but when someone stops and helps others on the way as you have with Sophia's heart and the Haiti help and setting up that warehouse in Nashville after the flood. Was all so wonderful and you deserve every success. I know that the more you get the more you will give. I love I will not say goodbye. I lost my husband suddenly and I have been pressured to move on. This song, the emotions and your voice have given me permission to move at my pace and to feel free to move on without having to Put my memories and love away. Thank you for this song... I would like to know how B.D. and Connie know Danny because this sound personal not your typical I don't like this guys music. To hope someone chokes on something is so incredibly ugly. Also if you hate him so much which is very apparent from your viral attack on another human being, what are you doing on his page. If you don't like him fine just don't support his music. Your opinion lost any value when became so filled with hate. I will pray for you for emotional healing.

Danny has an amazing voice! He will go far, no matter what people have to say about him. He's a natural, he's come so far since the start of AI. He's taking everything in stride and getting better with each step. I knew Danny when he was a teen-he's a very genuine person-and he hasn't changed. How many of us actually take time out of our busy schedules to volunteer our time? Or give percentages of our income? BTW Before you spread information about someone, unless you know them personally...you should probably keep your mouth shut. The more successful Danny is the more people he will help. I hope he gets more than he could ever imagine. I'll be right there supporting him. Great album! Every song is a keeper.

bulldog, He's was singing with his church before idol if he didn't have a love for it he would've not done it, I don't think singing in Church can get most people famous. Nothings wrong with him wanting to be success. We all strive for it in life regardless of career choice. Are you trying to brainwash his fans that it's better to be homeless than to try and achieve your goals in life.

bulldog: If Danny wants it all, I find no fault in that. I want it all too! Well, except fame. I have no desire for fame, but with Danny's love of singing and his desire to please his fans, along comes fame. But money and fortune? I say yes to both of those. I'd be "crazy not to." When I start working and am offered a good salary, it would be foolish for me to say I want less money. If I am fortunate enough to be healthy, should I desire to be sick? And being competitive? I am competitive too. When I take tests, I like making 100's. If I only make 98 or 99, I'm a little disappointed. Well, I'm kind of okay if my 98 or 99 is the highest grade. To make these grades, I have to work hard and study a lot. So I'm an overachiever. I don't mind being called that. Most of these things you have accused Danny of being don't seem like bad things to me. Of course, the "arrogant" part is just silly to say about Danny. I recognize "silly" when I read it (and also when I write it).

Bulldog, I have a French Bulldog so I wish you would change your name. My dog is so sweet. Even if what you said about Danny is true, I don't think your are correct, what is wrong with trying to be successful at what you do and love? Isn't that the American way? Isn't this country built on trying to be all you can be? Do you think other artists don't want to be successful? Do you mock them for it? Generally, people who are very successful in life have to be aggressive and competitive. You need the drive to survive. In business and I would suspect in the entertainment industry it would be very easy to be swallowed up by the demands and pressures. So at least give Danny some credit for being a very hard worker. That is something you should respect.

On most points, I agree with this review. I like how the song describes the tangled mess of emotions that a devastating loss can cause, and it has added meaning coming from a singer who has been through such an experience. The only thing that I don't like about this single is that the production sounds like a carbon copy of Rascal Flatts. I get a little fed up with new artists copying off the styles of the genre's current favorites.

That's a timely illustration of what I was talking about bulldog, but there is too much actual information out there about Danny now for those kinds of swipes to work. If he were an arrogant person who thought only of himself, he would not be putting so much of his time and resources into helping other people. With Sophia's Heart Foundation he recently launched a Music & Arts program in Milwaukee that benefits underpriveliged children. He opened a Flood Relief Center in Nashville to provide victims of the flooding with essential goods and services. He has participated in many, many other charitable activities. And of course there's the fact that he has been on the road across the country for months now, and time after time there are glowing reports from fans about how sweet he is to them, often staying long past the scheduled time to make sure that everyone who wants to greet him gets to do so. You dislike him so you are repeating the made up stuff I was talking about earlier, but it's simply not credible. If anyone knows even a modicum of facts about Danny I am convinced that they will draw an appropriate conclusion about who is "brainwashed" here.
bulldog says:

Danny has his idol bubble fans brains washed into thinking he is such a humble sweet man. He is a competitive arrogant man who plays the part his fans want. He doesn't just sing for the love of singing or appreciate a moderate success. He wants it ALL! Money, fame, and fortune. He has stated often how competitive he is. He doesn't just want to be successful, he wants to be more successful than anyone else. He is an over achiever and I hope he chokes on the bite he took that's bigger than he can chew!

For Al and other readers who aren’t familiar with American Idol, here’s a little background to help put the crazy stuff in context. I remember how stunned I was at it when I first started watching the show last year, so I know how you feel. There’s a whole little world of people who make their living off of AI fans, and they play a game of “get the hordes whipped up and posting on my blog by making up stories about the frontrunners”. It works really well for them. In Danny’s case, they start with something like a scene from the audition episode that showed Danny crying as he talked about Sophia, who had passed away just four weeks before. She had wanted Danny to try out, and at 28 that was the last year he would be able to do it. They made up a story about how Danny was just using his loss to try to get votes, and created insults and catchphrases to go with it. A complicating factor was that the other frontrunner, Adam Lambert (who I like very well), is gay, which caused people who hate gay people to crawl out of the woodwork with their insults. Although Danny is friends with Adam, it was convenient to tag him as a target for reactions to this. And so although Danny has never said anything bad about Adam (even Adam’s mother said that the rumors of problems between them was a myth), that was ignored in the “Adam vs. Danny” storyline. Most of this ridiculous stuff has died away now, both because the fomenters of it have moved on to making Lee the new “bad guy”, and because Danny, in the public eye and closely scrutinized for over a year now, has consistently demonstrated that he is a warm and kind person who loves people. All kinds of people. I have seen comments from many former haters who say that they now realize that they were manipulated into thinking things that were not true about him. But there are still a few who don’t really care what Danny is actually like, they just like to spout off because that is their idea of fun, and that’s where the crazy stuff that you see on this thread comes from. It is very tiresome but something that apparently comes with the AI territory. I believe that Danny has a huge appreciation for the platform that AI gave him, and doesn’t let this negative stuff dismay him. He is one of the least cynical and most positive people I have ever run across, even despite what he has been through. I love his voice and knowing what kind of person he is really adds a special dimension to his performances for me. Oh, and I am also not a “tea party” person. I live in Seattle, voted for Obama and have generally liberal viewpoints. Danny’s fans run the gamut from what I’ve seen, and we rattle along quite nicely together, having fun watching Danny launch his career.

Thank you Roughstock for this review....Danny is working so hard to be accepted by the country music community that he chose and obviously loves, so to receive such a positive review of his song is really appreciated by those of us that believe in him and have been supporting him since American Idol. Music that can touch the soul like Danny does in this song is a rare gift, and hopefully all of country music will recognize (as you have) Danny's ability to make that emotional connection through his music. As Randy Travis said recently to Danny in an interview, country music needs him. BTW, I am checking out country music through following Danny and am very pleasantly surprised by the level of talent and diversity of country artists...who knew!

When Danny's album 1st came out, I had to hunt for it at Best Buy--and there were only 2 copies left in 2 places on the shelves. But my hubby and I soon discovered even more so how this CD is fit together with songs from the heart--and a lot of catchy tunes and meaty, relevant lyrics. It's probably our favorite CD still...want to try and see him in person this summer. Was one of my two favs on AI--and as a Baby Boomer, I had never gone to one of these summer tours. But loved it last year. I agree with the article--and many of the comments: this CD has multiple singles just waiting to be 'discovered' by the general public. Let's get 'em played on ALL the radio stations! It'll be easier as the record label puts out more videos. Country is an excellent fit for Danny, and his life experiences have shaped and molded his own heart, so that the tunes ring out with pure honesty. Gotta go and put the CD on my kitchen CD player! Bye! Run out and get your CD while they last--you can always download a single, but you'll be happy if you get the whole package!

I'm what you'd call a red neck type of guy who still enjoys Merle, Willie, Bob Wills and the good ol' boys, but gotta add, this Gokey dude can really sing. I might even buy his album. I don't watch American Idol so alot of these comments don't make sense.

Count me in as another tree-hugging, Democrat, Obama-loving, feminist who just loves this singer! Danny Gokey can't be put in a box as far as his political views (just check out his twitter!) and neither can his fans.

Perhaps we should all take a moment to reflect on what this song is about? Let’s just stop the ‘hating’ etc…over Danny and listen to the lyrics of the song. I live in the UK and in Cumbria there has been a tragedy. A man shot and killed 12 people, wounding 11 with no reason…so I am sure the words of this beautiful song will resonate with the families of the victims of this terrible situation. Please don’t judge people for their situations and try to think of what Danny is conveying in the song. I don’t want to get into a war of words but just to bring a little ‘peace’ at this difficult time. Life is precious and to think it can be taken away at any moment makes me thankful to be alive…. Oh and thanks to Brandon Fraley for amazing piano and backing vocals!! Thanks for listening!

This song will be sang by many International singers. We Filipinos love to sing power ballads, such as I Will Not Say Goodbye. It will not surprise me if Charice, a filipina, will eventually have a version of this song in the future. It will not also be far fetched that Arnel Pineda, lead singer of Journey who is Filipino too, will have his own version. Danny has more possible hits in his Album such as Tiny Life, Crazy Not To, etc.

Actually, as a fan of Danny Gokey who is more on the conservative side, I have to say most of the other fans I've come across tend to be tilted in the other direction. Lol! But so what. I like artists who don't agree with me on everything, and certainly I work with and live near people with all kinds of views. Danny can absolutely sing his face off, and this is one of those songs that shows it very clearly. In a recording artist, that is mainly what interests me. An acoustic video showed up today with Danny singing I Will Not Say Goodbye with just a bare piano accompaniment. Check for yourself whether the guy can sing and whether this song has impact. http://watercoolerconvo.blogspot.com/2010/06/danny-gokey-i-will-not-say-goodbye.html

Patti, I am liberal democrat from a mid-atlantic state who voted for Obama. I love Danny Gokey and his music. So don't think his demographic is just "tea partiers." He is a person who generally cares about making the world a better place. His charity work is truly amazing. He is a wonderful role model. This is why this country is so screwed up, we can't look past even someone singing a beautiful song without making it political. IMO, tea party people spew a lot of hate and that is so not Danny. People losing loved ones and trying to deal with the pain is universal. It is not politics, it is simply human.

Hard to believe that anyone can have something negative to say about Danny Gokey. He's a genuinely nice guy with a big heart and an AMAZING voice. I loved his voice from his Idol audition. I loved his entire album the minute I heard it. So, no, he's not traditional country. They only people that really care about that are usually people who don't really like country music anyway. Once I heard Danny sing live, that was it for me! If you think the album is good, you should hear him in person! IWNSG is a great song with a ton of emotion. Danny can really make you feel the passion with this one. I think it's great that he connects with his songs. This is one of those that gives me chills when I hear him sing it, especially live. If you don't have the whole album yet, what are you waiting for? You won't be disappointed!

There's at least one obvious reason a lot of people came to check out this review and write comments. Matt invited it, and Danny Gokey retweetedt his on his twitter -- Danny has close to 115,000 followers. Not too hard to figure some of them, including me, are interested to read the review and comment about it, especially as Matt and Danny invited it after a couple of random hater comments showed up early on. Heard earlier tonight a radio DJ with a syndicated show that runs out of Texas, a tougher market for Danny generally. The DJ was talking about how this song made him cry when he played it on air yesterday, and that it's a song that gives him goosebumps.

JC: This is my second post. My first one was right below your "5 commenters" post. So, I'm one poster, and you are one poster. Subtract us from your "five". I am really impressed with how much work the remaining three posters had to do!

Why JC; I never thought of that, can you really do that?! You sound like you speak from experience. What are your other names here? Mine is Randy; you can see Randy's other comments below.

That's why there's a lot of different writing styles on this article right. Pathetic excuse for people actually liking him and his music. BTW there's more than 5-10 people that actually go and see him perform live. People do love him just because you don't, it's naive to think that others don't.
