Craig Morgan - "Bonfire"

The summertime often brings with it a plethora of songs that are never intended to inspire greatness or seriousness. Instead, these songs are often light-hearted and fun, slice-of-life kinds of songs.  Craig Morgan seems to be a master at recording these songs as he's scored summertime hits with "International Harvester," "Redneck Yacht Club" among his biggest hits so when the news came down the pike that he'd be releasing a single called "Bonfire," (click to listen) I just knew that it'd be something that recalled those hits.

Not only does "Bonfire" recall those hits but it's basically "Yacht Club" re-written to be about 'country backwoods homegrown hicks' who party every weekend 'gettin' wild at the bonfire.'  It mixes harder rock rhythms with some fiddles and banjos and there is a little steel guitar deep in the mix as well.  While this is sure to drive some traditionalists crazy, "Bonfire" is exactly the kind of song that has made Jason Aldean a star and helped sell him a boatload of records.  In that sense, it probably was a wise decision to release "Bonfire" and have it and another track replace two other songs ("Summer Sundown" and "Every Red Light") on the re-issued version of 2008's "That's Why" album as "Bonfire" sounds nothing like anything else on Craig's album and it does make the record feel a little more 'exciting' which is, coincidentally, what will happen with the everyday fan.  They will feel very excited about this song.  It's a hit.

I feel with many Craig Morgan songs about Texas and other songs about cowboys and the west contry music has the right to be the symbol for cowboys but, sadly now that doesn't really exist...now it's sad songs, small Towns and Women leaving and that's sad but, anyway my point being is that these two definitions contrast each other. The term of Women Leaving describes the newer age where many look down on Country and Cowboys defines the brighter days of the genre. Ahhh, the brighter day are before my time but, in the days of Haggrd and Waylon and the dumber days are the days of...now. I feel it is almost as if albums, such as "Bonfire" are growing to be more and more clich'ed

Furr, its better to use the "Contact" button at the bottom of the main page for this kind of inquiry. Craig has found a successful niche sound and style and he's sticking pretty close to it these days. This song is listenable as was its close sibling "International Harvester". Its not high art, but at least its real country, sort of...
