Carrie Underwood - "Undo It"

With her current place as one of country music’s go-to artists, it sure would be great if Carrie Underwood would record and release more tunes like the “Temporary Home” single or “I Told You So” instead of releasing pseudo country tunes like “Undo It.”  Written by Carrie with Kara DioGuardi, Luke Laird and Marti Frederiksen, the song is composed of catchy repeatable lyrics and the Lady Gaga-like “I wanna un-ah-ah-undo it” refrain of the chorus.  The production is crisp and there is an undeniable likability to the single and while that all makes it work for a great pop single, this song is also being released to country radio as her follow-up to “Temporary Home.”

Why couldn’t the jovial “Quitter” have been released to country radio instead?  While still technically a pop song, “Quitter” has a more organic feeling to it and could’ve still crossed-over to pop radio.  The same thing could be said about the acoustic but peppy "This Time" or the barn-burning downright country romp “Songs Like This.” Those would’ve made me (and even plenty of Carrie fans) happy.

When everything is said and done, “Undo It” is likely to find its way up to the top of the country charts regardless of what I think but that doesn’t stop me from wishing for something more from one of Country music’s best vocalists and most recognizable talents.  I think she can do so much better.

I really appreciate Carrie Underwood and her influence on country music, but this song IS NOT COUNTRY. It’s obnoxious how often Taylor Swift is put in a pop category but Carrie Underwood is no more country than she is. Last name, Jesus take the wheel, and Undo It are among a few of carries hits. Aside from the country themes of drinking, jesus, and break ups, there is nothing country about these songs. Undo it is just another example of this. Yes, the song is catchy, yes carries from some little town, yes she’s a sweet christian girl, but that doesn’t make this song country. As a pop hit, I would commend this song for decent lyrics and a fresh idea, however, as a country song, not so much.

Trish, I never said it wouldn't be the hit it's becoming only that she can and does have better songs than "Undo It." I don't hate it and I don't love it. Ergo the 2.5 star review.

Matt, you are out in left field on this review! Undo It was released to radio on Monday, May 3 and in just four days has already reached #28 on the charts. This is amazing! It is the fastest rising song on the country music charts. Country radio cannot get enough of this song. CMT is also doing a half hour premiere of the new video today which will also be airing again all weekend. Undo It might become the biggest song in country music for 2010!

It's just an over produced pop song that Britney Spears would sing. And it has one of those melodies where it's catchy at first but then starts to annoy you. I agree that Carrie can do so much better but she's yet to prove it.Hopefully the new chairman at Sony will guide her into a much needed new direction.

This is a great song and will be a major smash hit. That is why it is being released ahead of the other songs you mention. I hope you will write a follow up article when this song reaches #1 for multiple weeks. Also, when did you last year that much violin being played on a so called pop song as you say? Anyway, Undo It will be a country hit!

I have a ton of respect for some of her previous stuff. But this as well as cowboy casanova is more poppy than Taylor swift. This is deffenitly not country sorry. I wish she would have released play on it's a great track and has a way more country feel. I liked temporary home hated cowboy casonova and hate this so it's not favorable as far as singles off this album. Let's hope she can do better next time.

Matt, can you confirm that this is her next single? I haven't found any official sites to confirm it...

Seriously, are people just now realizing that "country" music and pop music are exactly the same thing nowadays? This is not passing judgment on the quality of a song, or whether or not it is should be a hit. I'm just saying that the line between genres has basically been erased and it is difficult to pigeon-hole a song into a particular classification. My 2 cents...

How can I purchase the actual music to "Falling Leaves" by Grandpa Jones so I can play it on my piano?

Other than the production on the chorus (Mark Bright should never be messing with Carrie's voice), I find the song very country. The music on the verses is great, and Carrie sings it with a very country twang. If this isn't country, then neither is Lady A's "Need You Now," which is a great song but not very "country", or any of Taylor Swift's songs, remixed or not. Of course it isn't traditional country, but it definitely has some country flavor to it. I appreciate this review, though. Even though you're not sure about the song, you do acknowledge that it is undeniably likable.
