After stumbling their way to #30 with "Fight Like a Girl" earlier this year, Bomshel seems to finally have something that their career has previously lacked: momentum. "19 and Crazy" has broken into the 40 with surprising speed, and for good reason: it's both commercially accessible and artistically distinctive. 

"19 and Crazy" is built on a thumping, unrelenting melody that's rather infectious and exciting, although it could probably stand to use a little more bass. On the surface this song may seem like the rose-colored nostalgia of such songs as "19 Somethin'," but it's tempered by a sense of maturity by the opening stanza, where she realizes she might later regret her belly button piercing or tattoo, and might tell her children not to do all of the crazy things that she did — but damned if she didn't have fun when she was 19 and crazy. Kelly Shepard handles the simple yet effective tune (which she co-wrote with partner Kristy Osmunson and suddenly ubiquitous songwriter Josh Kear) rather convincingly, giving a bold, twangy delivery reminiscent of LeAnn Rimes. 

With fewer females than ever having success in country music lately, it's refreshing to see a female act finally charting in the Top 40, especially one as diverse and unusual as Bomshel. With so many "fun" songs that often ring hollow, Bomshel has one that not only gets the job done, but also provides a vastly different angle from the girl-power mid-tempo "Fight Like a Girl." At the very least, "19" is a sign of good things to come.
