Blake Wise - I've Got This Feeling single review

It’s been nearly three years since a then nineteen year old Blake Wise signed his first record deal with Clint Black’s Equity Music Group.  In the subsequent three years, Wise has endured the collapse of Equity, signed with Broken Bow Records, and finally releasing his first single, Cornfields, only to watch it gain little traction to speak of and fail to chart.  However, Wise, now 21, could be headed for a breakthrough with his second single, “I’ve Got This Feeling.”

The single, about a man who feels a renewed sense of life and love thanks to his (presumably) new relationship, does a better job displaying Wise’s vocal strengths than his previous single did.  It’s fairly run of the mill lyrically, using imagery to show off his new life (first verse) and love (second verse) but it does paint an effective picture and provides an enjoyable melody.  The biggest misstep vocally is that it takes Wise most of the first chorus to up his energy level to match where the rest of the song is, the end result being that the first verse and chorus end up meshed together a bit.  That’s a rather small complaint though, especially for a newcomer.  I would also say that he does stretch his vocals a bit, exposing his limitations, but he gets credit for not trying to sing outside of his range (the way that Gary Levox and Craig Morgan are fond of doing).

In the end, we’re left with a straight up contemporary country number; nothing fancy, just a radio-friendly mid-tempo that should provide Wise a solid platform into the country format.  With Jason Aldean serving as a cash cow for BBR, they are eager to break through another newcomer, and Wise may just fit that bill.
