ACM Announces New Artist Category Nominees for 2010

The Academy of Country Music revealed early nominations for three categories today.
For the second year in a row fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artists. Fan voting will begin at www.VoteACM.com on Friday, February 26th, and will close on Friday, March 12. The winner in each category will be announced in mid-March and will move on to compete for Top New Artist. Voting for the Top New Artist category will begin at VoteACM.com on Thursday, April 1, and will close on April 18, with the winner being announced live during the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards broadcast on CBS.

· Jamey Johnson
· Chris Young
TOP NEW VOCAL DUO
· Bomshel
· Joey + Rory
· Steel Magnolia
TOP NEW VOCAL GROUP
· Eli Young Band
· Gloriana
· The Lost Trailers
From this list, it will be easy to see Gloriana as the top contender for the award since their fans already voted them the Best New Artist award at the American Music Awards last fall. The duo category is filled with talent but none of the three acts really stand a chance at winning the final award while any of the three of the Solo contestants are solid contenders. In the end I think the final three which will be chosen for the Top New Artist will be Gloriana, Chris Young and Joey + Rory. What say you?

Chris young has my vote. jamie johnson was good in 08 but hasnt really done anything this year. chris is more traditional than bryan so he's got my vote

Chris Young has three generations of fans in this family so we will be doing alot of voting. I enjoy other artists but no one pushes all the buttons for me except Chris!!

For anyone who is wondering, Jamey Johnson and Chris Young (and The Lost Trailers) are eligible for this award due to the ACM Awards rule where somebody can be nominated for these categories a total of two times and they 'must have made an impact' on the charts the previous year to be eligible. Chris never had a big album or single until last year and Jamey's best year might have been 2008 but he had a great 2009 too so he's rightfully here. However Jamey is now on his 2nd nomination and can't be included in any future 'new artist' categories going forward.

I do not see how Jamey Johnson is still considered a new artist..I enjoy some of his sound but NEW? Same for Chris Young. Luke Bryan is good & Glorians has a very distinct sound.

I will be voting for Chris Young. I love that he has combined traditional country music and has given it a new sound that I don't hear much of on country radio now. His new CD is the best I have heard in years. He has a huge future in front of him!

Most of these acts are at least decent (Johnson, Young and Joey + Rory are the cream of the crop), but I don't see how Gloriana doesn't win. I also don't see the need for three separate categories to start out. One Best New Artist race is enough.
